About St. Maarten

    The Friendly Island

Discover the unique charm of the smallest landmass in the world shared by two nations, where Caribbean warmth meets European elegance.

    Location

St. Maarten/Saint-Martin is located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, approximately 190 miles east of Puerto Rico. The island is part of the Leeward Islands chain and covers just 34 square miles (87 km²).

The southern Dutch side, Sint Maarten, is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The northern French side, Saint-Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France. Together, they make the island the smallest landmass divided between two nations.

    Rich History

The island was originally inhabited by the Arawak people. Christopher Columbus sighted the island on November 11, 1493, naming it “Isla de San Martín” after Saint Martin of Tours.

In 1648, the Dutch and French signed the Treaty of Concordia, peacefully dividing the island. Legend says the border was drawn by having a French sailor and a Dutch soldier walk the island’s perimeter—the French side ended up larger because the Frenchman drank wine while the Dutchman drank gin!

Today, this friendly division continues with no border controls—you can freely cross between the two nations and experience both cultures.

    Culture & People

St. Maarten is a true cultural melting pot. With over 120 nationalities represented among its 80,000 residents, the island celebrates diversity in language, cuisine, music, and traditions.

Languages: English is widely spoken throughout the island. Dutch is official on the southern side, while French is spoken in the north. You’ll also hear Spanish, Papiamento, and Creole.

The Friendly Island: Known for its warm hospitality, St. Maarten earned its nickname through the genuine kindness of its people. Visitors are welcomed like family, creating unforgettable memories.
